Safe Harbour to Alaska | Day 1 | Anacortes to Ganges

The last week has been super busy. Finalizing the watermaker install, tinkering with systems, provisioning, saying bye to friends and family… Yesterday I moved the boat around from Skyline Marina to Cap Sante Marina, fueled up, picked up Kevin Monahan (my crew to Alaska for the third year in a row), and met with the flotilla folks who are departing from Anacortes. A busy and productive day. Read more on … Read more

Airship to Alaska | Day 8 |Echo Bay to Port McNeill

We got up fairly early this morning at Echo Bay, chatted with Pierre a bit more while he showed us some of the work he’d done recently on the rental cabins. We pulled away around 7:30am, saying goodbye until September, when we stop on the way south again. Calm water, gray sky, and a pretty chill cruise over to Port McNeill. It’s still early in the season, so it’s fairly quiet here at Echo Bay…four boats or so. We chatted with Pierre for a bit before he had to go rearrange the … Read more

Airship to Alaska | Day 5 | Squirrel Cove to Shoal Bay

We got up early (5:30am!) to make the 3 hour cruise up to Dent Rapids. Looks like it’s going to be another gorgeous day. After we’d woken up a bit, I cooked some breakfast for us (bacon and eggs underway, woohoo!) and we made it to Yuculta Rapids about an hour and 15 minutes before slack. Transiting this direction, the three rapids in order are Yuculta, Gillard, and then Dent. … Read more

Airship to Alaska | Day 4 | Lund to Squirrel Cove

Airship Goes to Alaska 2016 We got up early this morning in Lund and headed up to Nancy’s for breakfast (and a couple of blackberry cinnamon rolls to go). Prawn season opened today, so the docks were crowded with prawn traps and buoys being loaded onto fishing boats. We left after breakfast and decided to head up toward Toba Inlet. I snapped a photo of our neighbor’s boat as they headed out … Read more

Airship to Alaska | Day 2 | Roche Harbor to Newcastle Island

We left Roche Harbor this morning after a lovely evening with near perfect weather. Check out the light on the chapel last night! At sunset, the Roche Harbor Color Guard does a flag ceremony where they take down the flags (the Washington State flag, the Canadian flag, the British flag, and then the United States flag), complete with soundtrack: Oh Canada, God Save the Queen, Taps, etc. Oh, and a canon … Read more
