Airship | Shearwater to Fury Cove

We decided to leave Shearwater this morning at 7am for the 50nm cruise down to Fury Cove. Conditions still foggy, but not AS foggy. As we were about to turn east into Lama Passage, I noticed a big circle of what maybe was bait fish, but it looked different than the usual surface disturbance from the fish…and sure enough, pretty soon a big humpback mouth came up right in the … Read more

Airship | Bubblenet Feeding in Nepean Sound on our way to Saycuritay Cove

We left Monckton Inlet this morning just after 9am and headed south in Principe Channel in much nicer conditions than yesterday. Last year when we took this same route home, we saw SO many humpbacks bubblenet feeding at the southern tip of Pitt Island (right there where the red/orange marker is) so we were hopeful there might be some whales in the area. Lucky for us, we soon spotted spouts … Read more

Airship | Honeydew to Portage Bay

This morning we had another present on our anchor to deal with before we could leave our beautiful Honeydew Cove. All the prettiest spots seem to come with kelp! All the finger-crossing and whale-dancing we did this morning to conjure the whales today worked!! There were SO many whales out in Frederick Sound after we rounded Pinta Point. Several large groups…some breaching and some tail-slapping and fin-slapping…it was hard to … Read more

Airship | Keku Islands to Portage Bay (And So Many More Whales)

**Note: There are no non-whale photos in this post. Not one.** We left our beautiful spot this morning and headed out into Frederick Sound assuming we’d see more whales, which we did. I got this cool shot of a nice white fluke, and our friend Andrea had an ID super quick for me (see photo caption). The further we went, the more whales we saw…HUGE groups of them together! We … Read more

Airship | Cape Fanshaw Bubblenet Feeding, Windham Bay

Our cruise yesterday from Thomas Bay to Windham Bay was whale-filled, including another (or the same?) group bubblenet feeding right around Cape Fanshaw. I took photos of a few more flukes to identify…uploaded to happywhale.com and will add captions once I have names. (Thanks to Andrea for turning me onto this site…I wish I’d have been doing this every year up here!) This one was identified as humpback whale Launaana … Read more

Airship | Thomas Bay, Scenery Cove, Baird Glacier and the Glacial Lake

We left Cannery Cove on Tuesday morning after pulling the crab pots (2 keepers) and headed out into Frederick Sound. Very little wind and quite nice besides the rain. As we neared Cape Fanshaw we noticed another boat that had been hanging out over there for an hour or so, and since it’s a popular spot with the whales, we adjusted course to veer a little closer, just in case. … Read more
