Airship | Red Bay and Snug Harbor

Last Friday we cruised from Portage Bay into Petersburg for a few days to wait out some super rainy weather. Dave and his brother Kyle (from Turnagain) flew home from Petersburg, and we’re on our own now. We left Petersburg late in the day on Sunday and anchored in Red Bay. On Monday it was still quite rainy, but Kevin went out fishing anyway to see if there were any coho around (he found only pinks).

By the end of the day the rain was letting up and evening brought some interesting light on the clouds.

We briefly spotted a black bear on shore just as it rounded the corner and headed into the woods.

On Tuesday morning we opted to make some miles south. We headed for a spot we don’t think we’ve been before: Snug Harbor, just north of Thorne Bay (~55nm from Red Bay).

Leaving Red Bay

It was foggy at first as we exited Red Bay, but after rounding Point Colpoys into Clarence Strait the fog cleared and we had a very nice cruise with a good current boost most of the way.

We arrived at Snug Anchorage just before 5pm.

It was raining a little when we arrived, but the rain passed quickly and made room for some blue sky and sun for the evening.

Kevin took the drone up for some aerial shots of the anchorage and surrounding area.

This anchorage feels pretty remote but we’re actually not that far from the town of Thorne Bay (on Prince of Wales Island)…the photo below shows some forest service roads…often surprising to see roads in the drone photos when we feel like we’re miles from anyone.

Beautiful spot! We’ll head to Ketchikan on Thursday and figure out what’s next!
