Every year we seem to spend our last few days beelining for home and taking very few photos. This year, perhaps even more so since my iPhone went overboard in BC, just north of Pruth Bay when we were anchored near our friend Steve in Lewall Inlet. It’s the first time I’ve ever lost a phone, and also, thankfully, the first time I’ve had Apple Care with theft and loss coverage. The claims process was super easy and incredibly fast.
The online form did ask me to describe the loss situation in as much detail as I could, which meant I told the full sob story of never having lost a phone before, having it tucked safely in the (deep) pocket of my Alaska Chicks hoodie, then watching as it fell from my safe pocket as I knelt on the swim step to remove the dinghy line off the cleat (probably bumping it up with my thigh as I knelt), then frantically thrusting my entire arm up to my shoulder into the water after it, missing it by about two inches, etc. It was very dramatic and sad, and they approved my request within about a minute and shipped a new one to me (care of our neighbor friends Taylor & Lauren) the very next day.
Anyway, just like nothing ever happened, and I will continue that Apple Care coverage as long as I have a boat.
We left Northwest Bay in the morning, taking advantage of a pretty good Strait of Georgia, cleared back into the U.S., and after about an 80nm day.
We anchored for the night at Eagle Harbor on Cypress Island, but didn’t go ashore since it was late (and we’d had quite a long day).
In the morning we slept in and had a leisurely morning, then cruised the rest of the way into our slip at LaConner. As we headed into Swinomish Channel, there were a handful of indigenous canoes making their way south…we think to the Medicine Creek Potlatch Journey happening in the Nisqually Basin July 31-August 5.
Back in LaConner in our slip, and since we were well-rested and had a good chunk of day left, we decided to unpack the boat, load the truck, and drive home to Portland.
Airship is all tucked in, and we’ll come back up in the nearish future to finish a few boat projects, get her cleaned up a bit more, and maybe even do a little cruising. But for now, we’re not missing the crowds of boats and people in the San Juan Islands! We had a very successful (albeit much shorter than usual) summer, a fantastic flotilla with awesome new friends, and now we’ll gear up for a couple months at home filled with art and book events!
