Day 12 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Shearwater to Rescue Bay

Our plan this morning was to leave Shearwater between 8:30am-9am. We were hopeful that the fuel barge had come during the night…Shearwater was out of diesel when we arrived! Ranger Tug IF really wanted to top off here so they didn’t have to stop and hope to get fuel at Klemtu or Hartley Bay, where unanswered calls to the fuel docks couldn’t verify availability. (If Shearwater was out, maybe the others were running low or out as well!) Likely one of them would have fuel, but it’s stressful to rely on “probably.”

The fuel barge had not come during the night, and in fact was apparently not going to arrive until Tuesday. Today is Sunday. However, we did learn from another boater that Bella Bella, just across the way, not only had fuel, but it was $2.20 per liter there, vs. the $2.96 per liter at Shearwater…saving them about $153 bucks Canadian. AND they got another chance to run up to the store in Bella Bella to get some ice cream they regretted not picking up yesterday. Score!

Dryad Point Lighthouse as we turn into Seaforth Channel. Seas rippled as advertised.
One foot chop as we turned into Reid Passage, also as advertised
Looking east down Seaforth Channel as we turned into Reid Passage…Sound Waves followed by Turnagain (with IF back just a little bit)

Ron and Jean on Sound Waves had Pacific white-sided dolphins surfing their bow wake (the first time for them!) and Tony (on Ranger Tug IF) sent me this still from the drone video he took while they were transiting Reid Passage. Very cool!

We arrived at Perceval Narrows a little before slack and there was no noticeable current at all.

Great looking Canadian charter boat called Swell

We’re all tucked in now at Rescue Bay and it’s another day of glorious weather. The wind picked up a bit this afternoon, people went out dinghying, kayaking, and fishing.

NOTE: By the way, when Kevin goes out fishing solo in the dinghy, he grabs the InReach satellite tracker and takes it with him, so the “Where is Airship?” button here on the homepage of Slowboat becomes the “Where is Kevin Fishing?” button temporarily. So if you see our tracker going back and forth outside the anchorage, that’s likely the reason. 🙂

Here’s another installment of Kevin’s “Fish With Me” video series he started last year:

Carrie took this ripply shot of a starfish while she and Tony were out kayaking:

We did dinner on our own boats this evening and just enjoyed the weather and the beautiful anchorage. Here are a few aerial photos of where we are (plus a few other boats…plenty of room!)
