Airship | Wood Spit to Ford’s Terror

Last night at Wood Spit, just as we were going to bed, a humpback cruised past us, spouting and lunge feeding as it made its way around the spit. The light was very low, but I took a few shots anyway.

Super cool! Also, I forgot to post the video Kevin took while he and Taylor were out halibut fishing…several humpbacks breaching right behind them (mama and calf are first). Awesome!

This morning, Kevin and Taylor pulled the crab pots and had three keeper males and 15 females. Fifteen!!! We’d forgotten what it was like to pull up a full crab pot! Yes, lots of females, but that’s okay…they’ll make more, and we got three to keep. We pulled anchor around 7:30am and cruised up Endicott Arm toward Ford’s Terror. Weather: mostly sunny and calm calm calm.

Timing was just about perfect as we arrived at the entrance to Ford’s Terror. We waited for a sailboat to exit and then headed right in. We spotted a brown bear on shore right as we were entering…first brown bear at Ford’s Terror this summer, and another Alaska animal for Lauren and Taylor to check off the list! (We’re checking ’em off fast this summer!)

We dropped the hook in about 80 feet, got a good set, and then put shrimp pots out and had a quick lunch before we went out to explore by dinghy. We saw a couple harbor porpoises that briefly looked like they were surfing our dinghy wake, a few seals, and a bunch of barn swallows as we got into the east arm.

Waterfalls still good, but not nearly as robust as they were when we were last here during the rain.

I love this texture on the wall…like a big leaf!

A fun group selfie in the sun!

First check of the shrimp pots: two dozen coonstripes and one small king crab (that we threw back of course, but neat!). We pulled some small kings up once before, a bunch of years back in Khutze Inlet BC…always kind of fun to have something different in the trap.

We had dinner tonight on the flybridge in this gorgeous weather while scanning the shoreline for bears. No bears, but maybe tomorrow.

Here’s a video Kevin made today with the drone flying up the river at the head of the west arm:
