Day 38 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Appleton Cove to Pavlof Harbor

A gorgeous morning in Appleton Cove!

Calm, beautiful morning at Appleton Cove

Kevin and Andrea pulled our crab pots and we had two nice big keepers.

As we were pulling the anchor we spotted a deer walking along the spit on the north side of the cove.

As we were heading out of Peril Strait we saw several humpbacks in the distance, and managed to see one close enough to get a decent photo. I pulled the brightness way up and cropped a fluke to send to Happy Whale and got an identification on this one.

A couple of the boats who were out ahead of us got to see a brown bear swimming across Peril Strait (north to south, about two miles across at this location!), and Vincent (Ralph’s son, on Kali) and Carrie on IF caught a few photos for us!

Toward the east there were some incredible thunderstorm cloud formations:

We saw one bear on shore as we were nearing Tenakee Inlet, just meandering along the long sandy beach.

Great shot of Turnagain from Vincent on Kali

We are all anchored in Pavlof Harbor and are the only boats here for now.

Vincent took this cool shot of Airship just before we turned into Pavlof Harbor

As we came in we spotted a bear crossing the river in front of the waterfall, but by the time we dinghied up there it was gone. But pretty soon we spotted another one walking along the far beach, so back in the dinghy we went!

A very fuzzy and good-looking bear! The bear munched on grass for quite a while and we watched quietly from the dinghy…we were even able to hear all the munching sounds!

Then it went back up into the grass to pick berries for a bit:

And then, a contemplative moment looking out into Freshwater Bay:

Next, the bear climbed up the side of the cliff and disappeared into the trees. A really good climber!!

Dave took Bodhi to shore in the kayak, but when it came time to return, Bodhi didn’t want to get back in the kayak. Dave started back thinking he might teach Bodhi a lesson, but Bodhi ended up happily swimming back to Turnagain.

Kevin took the drone up for some aerials:

Kevin and Andrea went out fishing for a bit to see if they could catch a halibut…and they DID! Perfect size, too! Looks like dinner tomorrow night!

We got together for 4th of July grill night on Airship and had a super fun time! We grilled burgers, hot dogs, brats, and some steak, and had sides of mushroom quesadillas, bean salad, crab dip, roasted potatoes, and sliced cantaloupe. Festive and delicious!

Kevin made this really nice video during his drone flight earlier:
