Yesterday we decided to see if there was room for us at Matia Island…it’d been ages since we’d been there, and it was mid-week, so maybe? I didn’t remember if the dock was big enough for us, but the park website references a 128-foot dock there, so perhaps. We also didn’t recall if anchoring was an option (too rocky?) but we figured Sucia Island was an easy backup if there wasn’t room.
But, there was room…barely. The 128 feet is combined (both sides of the dock added together), not the length of the dock. There was one small boat on the right side and a sailboat leaving the left side when we arrived, so Airship went in slowly and docked in front of the small boat on the right (with our bow hanging off the front, toward shore). A bit shallow (but the tide was still rising at that point), so we figured we’d do some math to figure out if we could stay. Melissa Lynn came in on the left side.

We had a little bite to eat and then the small boat behind us left, so we backed up and gained ourselves a few extra feet of depth. I think we’ll stay! We headed out for a hike around the island.

Missie took these cool shots of this hollowed out tree:

Airship and Melissa Lynn on the dock and another boat (soon to be two) anchored out.

After dinner, we all four got into Airship’s dinghy and cruised around the whole island for a nice sunset cruise.

Gorgeous! So glad we got to stay the night.
Melissa Lynn departed this morning around 7…it’s been so much fun buddy boating with them! We’ll certainly catch up back in Portland, but for now we’re on our own.
The depth was about 8 feet when we left this morning (on its way down…and our draft is just under 5 feet).

There’s still smoke in the air, making the sunsets and sunrises pretty, and so far we can’t really smell any smoke in the air, so there’s that.

We’re now on our way back to our home marina in LaConner, where The Big Unpacking will begin and we’ll head home to Portland for now. Thanks for coming along with us this summer!
