Airship | Nanaimo

We continued our cruise out into the Strait of Georgia yesterday (after waiting for the cable ferry across to Denman Island). The red/green lights on shore (letting vessels know when and when not to cross) are much easier to spot on a foggy gray day than they are in bright sunlight.

Oh good, back to flat. Whew!

The strait was lovely yesterday. Not much traffic, not much wind.

Originally we thought we might try to stop at Newcastle Island, but it was super crowded and didn’t look like there would even be room to anchor. Luckily, they had room for us over at the Nanaimo Port Authority, so we tied up to the dock there and spent the afternoon walking around a bit, getting rid of trash, grabbing some fish and chips at Troller’s (voted #1 in Nanaimo for fish & chips), and relaxing on board.

Cute tiny tug with a big name: Warrior

Some friends of ours from Portland happened to be camping on Vancouver Island for the week, and were near enough that they decided to detour and come for a visit (yay!). We hung out a bit on Airship (they hadn’t seen our boat before)  and then walked over to Penny’s Palapa with Missie and Russ for dinner and had a fun dinner at the floating eatery!

Not the view we’re accustomed to having from Airship!

This morning, we left the dock just after 6am to time for slack at Dodd Narrows.

This ferry parked overnight on the finger adjacent to us

Missie took this sweet photo of Airship as we were departing at dawn:

There was no wind to speak of, and the water was superflat as we headed south in Stuart Channel.

We passed several anchored ships as we continued south, and the flat water and soft sky made for some cool ship photos.

We cleared Customs into the US using the CBP Roam app (with a short video conference — “conference” except they can see me but I can’t see them…unfair)…the Customs agent was super nice and said it was fine if we anchored somewhere overnight en route to our home marina. So one more night before we’re back!
