We cruised from Pruth Bay down to Fury Cove on Sunday, hoping that the conditions forecast for Cape Caution the following morning accommodated our desire not to have to wait until the better window — five days later.
Fury Cove is a gorgeous stop. White sand/shell beaches, a beautiful view out into Fitz Hugh Sound, and many little islets to explore by dinghy or kayak. We had dinner with Ralph and Mike on Kali, called it an early night, and said we’d discuss the plan in the morning after looking at the 4am and 5am forecast and hourly reports from the West Sea Otter weather buoy.
In the morning, the forecast looked the same as the night before. The wind was a non-issue at all, but the swells were still reporting 4 feet at 7 seconds. We opted to get out there and see how it was.
We had a fine crossing — not the worst, not the best, but fine. A bit rolly, and the swells were up to maybe 6 feet, but as I said, not terrible.
We’d planned to stop at Port McNeill, but it turned out they didn’t have room for us, so we opted to go all the way to Mound Island (82 nautical miles!!)
In the morning we pulled anchor around 6:30am and headed into Johnstone Strait. The early morning light at Mound Island was amazing!
And Johnstone Strait was flat calm. ALL. DAY.
In the morning we had a nice push of current with us, which of course at some point changed and was against us, but it all evened out and we’re now anchored in Kanish Bay behind the Chained Islands and it’s beautiful and sunny and warm.
Kali plans to leave around 5am to catch the early slack at Seymour Narrows, but we’ll get the later one and stop in Campbell River.
We are really making miles now, so there’s not much to write about besides that.
