We could have stayed several days in Khutze Inlet, especially with weather like this! But we’re all about the miles right now, so off we went.

Yesterday’s cruise was forty-something nautical miles to Rescue Bay, and then we got out for some dinghy exploring and some fishing. Kevin caught a nice sized chinook, had several others on that fought hard and won, and brought in one smaller chinook. He was pretty happy about finally getting fish. The bummer about coming home early is that we left Alaska before the salmon were in, so unlike last summer when our freezer was full of fish by the time we came home, we’re sorely lacking in that department at the moment. Well, until this afternoon.
The bigger chinook was 26 inches, and the smaller one…smaller and I don’t remember the length. Fresh salmon dinner in our very near future!
This morning we left Rescue Bay at 5am (yuck) for a longer cruise (sixty-something nautical miles) all the way down to a new-to-us spot just north of Pruth Bay called Lewell Inlet. Ralph found this spot the other day and asked if we’d been there, and we hadn’t, so we made a plan.
I learned yesterday that our friend Steve was in Pruth Bay, so I texted him to ask where he’d be the next couple nights, hoping we could connect, and guess what? He was in Lewall Inlet! So we’d be crashing his one-boat party for the night and will get to catch up!
This is just after 5am in Mathieson Channel…we saw a handful of humpbacks but not really close enough for photos.

We did see this lone orca in Seaforth Channel though…looked like a big one!

We had a beautiful cruise down to Lewall Inlet, dropped the hook in about 30 feet, and Kevin and Mike went out into Hakai Pass to see about some more fish. We got to connect with Steve and Colin on Aruna (a very cool Kristen steel trawler), and cooked some fresh chinook for dinner.
The weather is cool, breezy, and gray…strange after our 80 degree super hot and sunny day in Rescue Bay yesterday!
