It’s been quite rainy the past couple days, and we’ve had a lack of wildlife, so not a ton of photos to show so far.
We had a quiet night in Portage Bay, then continued on down Frederick Sound toward Petersburg. We planned a long day today — 60nm or so — from Portage Bay, past Petersburg and down Wrangell Narrows, across Sumner Strait to Exchange Cove. As long as the weather is rainy and dreary, we figure we might as well make some miles.
We got a nice boost of current through Wrangell Narrows and popped out into Sumner Strait to be greeted with more of this beautiful water color, painted with glacial silt.
Exchange Cove was quiet and empty and we had a nice chill evening with zero wind and only a slight bit of rain. In the morning, similar, but much brighter with some blue sky.
Clarence Strait conditions were great, and only as we got within about 2nm of the entrance to Meyers Chuck did it start to get a little choppy. Only 12-15kts of wind, but from the south…so a long way to build up some chop!
We pulled through the skinny entrance and found plenty of room on the dock.
Eager to stretch our legs a bit, we headed for the trail that leads through this quaint village and out to the beach.

This little building used to be a gallery where folks who lived here (I assume) sold stuff they made: quilts, knitted/crocheted hats/scarves, pickled kelp…stuff like that…and it was wonderful. It’s empty now, and I really miss it.

We’ll stay here tonight and likely call it an early night. Our plan is to head out early tomorrow, stop in Ketchikan to mail a package and fuel up a bit more for the rest of the trip south, then head on to Kah Shakes Cove (provided Dixon is still looking good for Sunday). After Dixon we’ll meet up with Ralph and his friend Mike (on Kali) and head down the outside of the inside (the route west of Grenville Channel) together. We’ll keep you posted!
