Day 9 | 2024 Flotilla to Alaska | Green Island to Codville Lagoon

We departed Green Island anchorage at a leisurely hour this morning…everyone was out by around 9am.

We turned north in Fitz Hugh Sound and had a very peaceful cruise up to Codville Lagoon. The sky began cloudy and gray and eventually cleared for some blue.

Turning to blue as we neared Codville Lagoon

A couple miles south of Berhhardt Point we saw whales in the distance. At first just flukes and I thought they were humpbacks, but then one black part stayed out of the water for a long time and as I grabbed and looked with the binocs…could easily see it was the fin of an orca.

As we neared the point we saw two adults and a baby…feeding on fish close to shore. At one point I could even see the tiny fish jumping out of the water, but didn’t capture that with my camera. But here are a few pics that I did get:

A nice welcome!

We entered Codville Lagooon and had a quick lunch, then dropped shrimp traps and crab traps. In the afternoon we all gathered for the short hike up to Sagar Lake.

Dinghies at the trail head, Codville Lagoon
Colorful vegetation along the trail
Pretty sure this is wolf scat on the boardwalk trail
Sagar Lake (the red is from cedar tannins)
Walking the beach at Sagar Lake
Many wolf tracks along the beach, as usual
This is a fairly large animal, I’d say
The lake was more full than we’ve seen…just a thin strip of beach along the shoreline

Kevin went to pull the shrimp traps and came back with one shrimp. That’s a LOT of work for one shrimp, but I sautéed it for him.

They’re even smaller once you remove the head and cook ’em!

We had dinner on our own and tomorrow we’ll make the short run into Shearwater for provisions and whatever other chores and top-offs folks need.
