Airship | Gut Bay Aerials

At 9pm, after a wonderful dinner on Airship with Dan and Eileen, the rain had finally stopped and the clouds had lifted and the light was gorgeous, so guess what? Aerials!! Airship and Fortunate rafted just inside the mouth of the river, another boat (a Nordhavn called Seacret), came in earlier this evening and is anchored to the right of us in this photo: Wow. Just wow. Definitely coming back … Read more

Airship | Toledo Harbor to Gut Bay

Toledo Harbor was a great stop! I can imagine it wouldn’t be as good if Chatham wasn’t as calm as it was yesterday and last night, but we had a very quiet night at anchor. Same in the morning….look at how flat the water is! We had an uneventful easy cruise as we continued up the east side of Baranof Island. We saw no other boats…not even one! There was … Read more

Airship | Puffin Bay to Toledo Harbor

After the winds died down yesterday afternoon, we had a serene, completely calm overnight in Puffin Bay. We pulled the anchor this morning around 7am and headed for Cape Ommaney. We were hoping the fog would burn off by the time we got to the cape so we could at least see what it looked like. Pretty soon we were definitely feeling the drama of our 3+ knots of current … Read more

Airship | Redfish Bay to Puffin Bay

We woke in Redfish Bay this morning to a thick marine layer of gray, but no big deal because it had already started burning off by the time we left around 8am. It was even calmer outside than it was yesterday…very minor swells and just a tiny bit of wind chop. Today’s trip was under 10nm, so a short hop to check out a new spot. This place is gorgeous!! … Read more

Airship | Scow Bay to Redfish Bay

We left Scow Bay a little early this morning (7am) since we had a longer day than the past few (a whoppin’ 33nm to Redfish Bay). I wish we had just a bit more time to slow down and pop in and out of more anchorages, but I guess it leaves us more to see the next time we do this leg. It’s interesting…the west side of Baranof Island is … Read more

Airship | Juneau, Funter Bay, Pavlof Harbor

We spent a week or so in Juneau after the flotilla ended…visiting with friends and family (Laura’s brother Jason flew down from Anchorage with a friend for a visit), and made good use of the rental car we reserved (used the Turo app for the first time…will definitely do that again!) We took a couple trips to Western Auto & Marine, Jerry’s Meats & Seafood (smoked salmon, double smoked bacon, … Read more

Days 41-42 | 2023 Flotilla to Alaska | Tracy Arm Cove, Dawes Glacier, Ford’s Terror

A downright leisurely morning in Tracy Arm Cove — we didn’t leave until just before 9am. The plan for today is to head up Endicott Arm to see how close we can get to Dawes Glacier, before turning around and heading for the entrance to Ford’s Terror so we arrive around 3:30-4pm. High slack in Juneau is at 4pm, so we should be able to transit the entrance somewhere between … Read more

Day 39 | 2023 Flotilla to Alaska | Couverden Island Cove to Taku Harbor

We wanted to leave sometime before 6am this morning because it was a long day (53nm) down to Taku Harbor. As has become customary, most of us are pulling anchor at the time we all said we’d set our alarms for…so 5am it was! But the reward was pretty incredible. We had a tiny bit of wind and a little chop, but the wind wasn’t supposed to pick up until … Read more
