Day 27 | West Side of Vancouver Island Flotilla | Port Renfrew to Victoria

We left Port Renfrew at first light this morning. The weather continued to cooperate and though we had some current against us for a good portion of today’s 53nm cruise, we had little fog and very calm water — a wonderful way to spend the last day of flotilla cruising! We arrived in Victoria around 2:00 p.m. and got situated on the docks at Causeway Floats. This is one of … Read more

Airship | After-Flotilla Cruising | Tod Inlet, Sidney Spit, Victoria

Circumnavigating Vancouver Island Flotilla | Day 27 | Port Renfrew to Victoria

September 15 – We left Port Renfrew at 6:30 a.m. for the last leg of the flotilla — the 50+ mile section from Port Renfrew to Victoria. We took advantage of the flood current we’d have for the first part of the day, with between 1 and 2 knots of current pushing us along for the first several hours. The Strait of Juan de Fuca was exceptionally calm today, with … Read more

West Side of Vancouver Island Flotilla | Days 19-20-21 | Bamfield to Sooke Harbour and Victoria

Bamfield to Sooke Harbour is a long cruise–about 73nm. The forecast was wind light, becoming west 10-20 knots in the afternoon, with some fog. We left Bamfield at first light…about 5:30 a.m. The sky (and thus, the water) turned bright pink as we headed out of Trevor Channel. Amazing!  There was a thick fog bank out toward sea, but our cruise was clear and gorgeous! We arrived in Sooke Harbour … Read more

Airship | Gorge Waterway and Fisherman’s Wharf, Victoria, B.C.

The other day Kevin and I decided to take the dinghy out to explore the Gorge. The Gorge Waterway is a narrow tidal inlet that connects Victoria Harbour to Portage Inlet. Here’s what it looks like on the chart (with the yellow line being our cruise from Causeway Floats, up and back about 7.2 nautical miles): From Victoria’s Inner Harbour the scenery changes from city, to industrial, to urban nature … Read more
