We left Petersburg yesterday morning around 8am. A beautiful, mostly clear, sunny day! We transited Wrangell Narrows riding the current in and then also out…it’s fun when the timing works and you get a current boost the whole way through! We stopped and anchored on the east side of Sokolof Bay, a spot we were in once before (over July 4 in 2018). We dropped the anchor in about 30 feet and set easily. Last time we were here we saw one bear on shore, but it’s a small island and we don’t really expect that to happen again.
The water color in this whole area is just gorgeous due to the glacial silt.
We dinghied around a bit just to get out in the sun and light breeze, and to get a little different view of things.
Kevin took a few aerials in the afternoon after a sailboat had come in to join:
You can see Wrangell in the distance in this shot:
We slept in a bit this morning and pulled anchor around 8:30am or so…super flat calm cruise until we got into Eastern Channel behind Wrangell Island when the wind picked up to about 12kts from the north. Very little chop, but boy the color of the water when the sun shines on it is amazing.
As we were entering Berg Bay we spotted a small buck swimming across the channel:
We anchored in about 70ft. There are guests in the Forest Service Cabin so we tried to give them some space and anchored out from the head of the bay a bit.
Here are some early evening aerials of Berg Bay and surrounds:
And here’s a video tour of the area that Kevin made:
Tomorrow we’re going to cruise up Bradfield Canal a ways…new area that we haven’t explored before!
