Day 24 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Thorne Bay to Exchange Cove

We made a “leave whenever you want to” plan for today…some people left at 7, some at 8 and some not until after 9! Clarence Strait was bumpy for a bit (2-3ft chop, 15-22kts of wind on the nose), but it calmed down eventually and I think most of the boats saw some kind of wildlife along the way. We first saw a couple humpbacks, but didn’t get any great photos.

Single humpback along the shore

Then pretty soon after we spotted the humpback(s) (there may have been a few…boats ahead reported seeing four), a couple of orcas popped up right in front of Airship, heading our same direction.

We stopped and floated for a bit, watching them, and suddenly one surfaced about 10 feet from us (!!!!). This is what was left after my startled whoop:

A minute or so later, it, or one of its buddies, was a ways off, again parallel to us heading north, before moving back to accompany Turnagain for a while. Fun!

I didn’t take many photos today, because it was bouncy for a bit, and then I was working underway for the rest of the bit.

Tonight is another grill night on Airship. By 5pm, the sun we were promised had not really materialized. At least it’s not raining!

Kevin took the drone up for a few aerials once we all were in and anchored.

Just before we gathered at 6pm, some sun!!

Dinner was delicious and fun, as usual. Lots of good grillin’, homemade cornbread, green salad, roasted asparagus and brussels sprouts, grape salad, watermelon, crab cakes…so good!

Tomorrow, on to Petersburg!
