Day 21 | Flotilla to Alaska | Thoms Place to Wrangell

We are all enjoying the slower pace, now that we’re in SE Alaska. With a short cruise from Thoms Place to Wrangell, we had time to sleep in a little, check crab traps, and depart at a more sensible hour.

Several of us had some luck with crabbing.

Fleming Evenstar left first and sent back this gorgeous photo of the superflat water:

There were a few more clouds in the sky by the time we finished checking crab pots and got coffee and headed out.

Approaching Wrangell

Kali, Dog Star, and Impulse (all flotilla alumni) opted to by bypass Wrangell and anchor over in Roosevent Harbor on Zarembo Island for the night. They’ve all seen Wrangell, and with limited transient space in Heritage and Reliance Harbors, they instead got a new anchorage to try out! We’ll connect back up with them tomorrow.

Shakes Island

Last year in July, hundreds of people gathered for the Wrangell’s first totem pole raising ceremony in 38 years! They unveiled five new totem poles, including three at the Chief Shakes Longhouse on Shakes Island.

We walked around the carving shed for a while, wandering among the older totems on display.

This new totem is being carved and painted out there as well:

The color green on these older totems seemed different than we’d seen before:

After a great walk around town, we returned to Airship in Reliance Harbor to work out tomorrow’s plan.

We met for a fun dinner up at the Stikine Inn at 6pm…food was its usual good (LARGE) portions, and the service was fantastic.

Tomorrow we’ll continue onto Petersburg, where we will meet back up with the alumni!
