Day 22 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Ketchikan to Kasaan

We departed the docks in Ketchikan by 6am, hoping for a nice smooth cruise across Clarence Strait (which isn’t always guaranteed). We dodged (okay not really “dodged”) a couple cruise ships on our way north in Tongass Narrows, and were met with relatively calm water and not much wind as we crossed Clarence and headed into Kasaan Bay. We’ve been visiting Kasaan on our own (and once with a small … Read more

Days 20-21 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Ketchikan

Monday morning in Ketchikan started out very windy and very rainy! Early in the afternoon the sun came out, and we even had some blue sky! We decided to pull our little wagon up to the market while the weather was pleasant and we got all of our shopping/reprovisioning taken care of. On Tuesday morning we hitched a ride with Dave and DeAnne (and Bodhi) up to Totem Bight State … Read more

Day 19 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Pond Bay to Ketchikan

At 4am this morning, while at anchor in Pond Bay, we were startled awake by what sounded like a loud and distressed “Hey!! HEY!!!” or “Hey! HELP!!!” A male voice. Kevin bolted up from the pillow and said “Did you hear that???”  I had, but thought it was in my dream until that point. We threw on clothes lightning fast and ran up to the pilothouse, opened the doors, and … Read more

Day 18 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Prince Rupert to Pond Bay

Conditions this morning for Dixon Entrance still looked fantastic, so we were off the docks by 5am. Turns out, we weren’t the only ones. This is what happens when the weather window is as good as it was today (and yesterday): We transited Venn Passage, a twisty but nicely marked channel, calm in the early morning (in theory), but small fishing charter boats zooming past on either side add a … Read more

Day 17 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Baker Inlet to Prince Rupert

We woke to a gorgeous, peaceful morning in Baker Inlet. Zero wind, glassy water, and blue sky! I went out on the deck to take photos of the other boats. DeAnne on Turnagain reciprocated and sent us this one! There was some great color lining the walls of Watts Passage as we transited at low tide…fun to see all the anemones all closed up and waiting for water. We emerged … Read more

Day 16 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Lowe Inlet to Baker Inlet

Last night in Lowe Inlet was very windy and the boats all moved around at anchor quite a bit. A little tougher to get good sleep in those conditions, but luckily we weren’t leaving the anchorage until 11:30am or so which meant we could try to get a little extra snoozing in after the wind died down this morning. Also the morning, the rain returned. It was bound to happen. … Read more

Day 15 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Khutze Inlet to Lowe Inlet

We left Khutze Inlet this morning just before 6am for our 55nm cruise to Lowe Inlet. Conditions were pretty much like this the whole day…a little wind, occasional chop, some current with us and some current against us. It’s funny how the perspective changes after a couple weeks on the water as we make miles north. We left this morning before 6am, and when I noticed it was nearing 9am, … Read more

Day 14 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Another Day in Khutze Inlet (Five Bears!)

(Yes, I know, five bears and I lead with a picture of a duck, but isn’t that a cool duck??) This morning we woke to bright sun and blue sky, again. Lovely. We were the only boats in here now, so after breakfast, Kevin took the Mavic Mini* up for a few aerial photos. Today was all about looking for bears! High tide was around 2pm, and at noon we … Read more
