Airship | Ford’s Terror to Wood Spit

We slept in again this morning at Ford’s Terror, and then Taylor made a super yum breakfast taco bar…scrambled eggs, hash browns, Jerry’s double-smoked bacon, tomatillo cream sauce, etc….and we had our breakfast on the flybridge, soaking in all the incredible scenery with more delicious food. After pulling the shrimp pots for the last time (~30 more coonstripes), we pulled anchor and headed for the exit. When we entered Ford’s … Read more

Airship | More Ford’s Terror

Another sunny day in Ford’s Terror! We’re gonna soak it all up, too, because looking ahead shows a whole bunch of cloudy/rainy days. This morning’s shrimp trap pull: 50 more coonstripes and one big spot prawn daddy. When discussing what to do with our fresh Dungeness crab from yesterday at Wood Spit, the words “crab benedict” popped up (one of my favorites!) and so this morning, guess what Taylor made!?? … Read more

Airship | Wood Spit to Ford’s Terror

Last night at Wood Spit, just as we were going to bed, a humpback cruised past us, spouting and lunge feeding as it made its way around the spit. The light was very low, but I took a few shots anyway. Super cool! Also, I forgot to post the video Kevin took while he and Taylor were out halibut fishing…several humpbacks breaching right behind them (mama and calf are first). … Read more

Day 44 | 2025 Flotilla to Alaska | Endicott Arm, Dawes Glacier, Ford’s Terror

Sun!! When we woke up there were shadows!! It didn’t last, however, but it was beautiful nonetheless. We pulled anchors and headed for Endicott Arm around 7am. We wanted enough time to get up to the glacier if we could, and then back to Ford’s Terror early enough to be able to take people in and out of the entrance by dinghy, which is always fun for first-time people, so … Read more

Airship | Ford’s Terror and Wood Spit

Monday – We left Tracy Arm Cove this morning on the late side (for us – 10am-ish) to get to the entrance to Ford’s Terror by 1:30pm (high slack in Juneau). It’s been a few years since we took Kevin’s brother to Ford’s Terror, and he’s psyched to see it again. The flood current was rippin’ as we crossed the Tracy Arm Bar…maybe 4-5 knots against us. It was very … Read more

Days 41-42 | 2023 Flotilla to Alaska | Tracy Arm Cove, Dawes Glacier, Ford’s Terror

A downright leisurely morning in Tracy Arm Cove — we didn’t leave until just before 9am. The plan for today is to head up Endicott Arm to see how close we can get to Dawes Glacier, before turning around and heading for the entrance to Ford’s Terror so we arrive around 3:30-4pm. High slack in Juneau is at 4pm, so we should be able to transit the entrance somewhere between … Read more

Day 38 | Flotilla to Alaska | Ford’s Terror to Juneau

We had the anchors up by 5:45a.m. this morning to make our way to the rapids for high slack, which we thought would be around 6:30a.m. The rapids cooperated nicely and we had an easy transit. Exiting Ford’s Terror and motoring out of Endicott Arm always feels a little deflating. On the way in, the views get progressively more impressive. On the way out, the sheer cliffs turn into steep, … Read more

Days 35 – 37 | Flotilla to Alaska | Tracy Arm Cove, Endicott Arm, Ford’s Terror

The weather during this flotilla hasn’t all been great, but when it has counted the most (in the most beautiful spots), the weather weather has cooperated unusually well. Few experiences during a summer cruise in Alaska rival visiting a tidewater glacier, and being able to do it on a sunny day is a huge bonus. Somehow, we lucked into wonderful weather for our trip up Endicott Arm and into Ford’s … Read more
